The Penllergaer Splash Appeal (Splash) has been selected as Sainsbury’s Charity of the Year to work with the local Sainsbury’s Gorseinon store to raise funds towards the project.

Sainsbury’s Gorseinon, store manager Gerald Owen confirmed that colleagues were enthusiastic about the partnership and instore fundraising had already started with customer donations collected at a weekend funday and bakery tasting event, bringing in £225.

“This is the first time the Gorseinon store has taken part in the Local Charity of the Year Campaign and we see it as a great opportunity to make a difference in the community.
We chose Splash because it is a local initiative with a long term ambition to provide facilities to serve the local community. We really believe that Sainsbury’s staff and customers will get behind this ambitious project and help the charity achieve its goal”

The pupils from the Special Teaching Facility at Penllergaer Primary School have already been welcomed at the store and met with store manager Gerald Owen and "charity champion" Melodie John. Pupils, staff and carers were given a tour of the store and supplied with bakery goodies to take back to school with them.

Plans are already underway to drive forward a range of store based fundraising activities that will engage the local community. There are also discussions to develop some exciting, higher profile events in 2010.
